A study shows that going to work on a bicycle is related to a lower risk of suffering from diseases. 

The hectic life we lead as people, often prevents us from doing more exercise or hobbies related to physical activity, in order to lead a healthy life. One solution to this problem is to go to work by bicycle and thus kill two birds with one stone.

A paper published in the British Medical Journal talks about the results that particularly concern cycling and its importance for our health. After a 5-year study in which people were analysed on the basis of the means of transport they used to go to work and taking into account aspects such as sex, age or physical activity, it was found that going to work by bicycle was related to a 41% lower risk of death than when travelling by car or public transport.

It is therefore considered necessary to create strategic plans to promote what has been called’active travel’, with improved infrastructure, an increase in the number of cycle lanes, subsidised programmes for the purchase of bicycles, etc. In short, to make it easier for the population to encourage the rise of cycling culture, as has already been done in countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark. This would mean not only very healthy long-term benefits for the population, but also for the environment, with decongested traffic and less pollution.
