RACE: wants to install registration, insurance and points card for cyclists

The car club claims a road cohabitation plan for the car and the cyclists

The Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) has considered the possibility of extending the points card to cyclists and obliging them to have insurance and registration. This is one of the means proposed by the club, given the increase in the number of deaths on Spanish roads.

In this sense, the technical director of ConBici, Manuel Martín, has stated, in statements to Europa Press, that it seems “absolutely regrettable that an entity like RACE makes that proposal that is not valid in any country in the world” and added That “the implementation of this measure would almost no one go on a bicycle”.

In addition, the automobile club calls for a plan of coexistence on the road for the car and the bicycle, where both users are taken into account. Before this, the technical director of ConBici recalled that cyclists are the victims and that the cars are the most dangerous. “Where you have to take action is not in the bikes, but in the cars that are the ones that create the danger,” he reiterated.

Along with this standard, the RACE demands a greater commitment to reduce the accident rate of vulnerable users, with special attention to the group of motorists, who in the past 2016 represented more than 40% of those killed on weekends.

Finally, the club has indicated regarding the points card that “although it is a necessary tool and has proven its usefulness, focusing efforts to reduce road accidents only in the permit points will be insufficient and ineffective.”
