Campaign on the importance of helmet on the bicycle

The Traffic and Road Safety Code obliges children under 16 to wear helmets on urban roads

The Mobility Department of Zarautz City Council last year launched a campaign to warn of the importance of helmet use on the bicycle. The objective of the same is to raise awareness of the importance of using the bicycle helmet and the Consistory recalled the importance of its use through a press release.

The Traffic and Road Safety Code states that the driver and the occupants of bicycles under the age of 16 are required to use the helmet on urban roads. The law also requires that all users who ride bicycles on long-distance routes, such as Zarautz to Getaria or Zumaia, are protected.

In this regard, they report that as of April will be fined minors under 16 years who do not wear helmets on the bicycle on urban roads and within the city, as it is considered a serious fault, so that the fines rise to 200 Euros. “The campaign will focus, above all, on children under 16, age established by the Traffic Law for the mandatory use of helmets on urban roads, and, on the other hand, for being the most unprotected collective on the road,” Explains the Councilor for Mobility, Maite Garrastazu.

He also stresses the importance of keeping the lights on when riding a bicycle: “you have to put the white light on the front and the red light on the back of the bike. The reflective orange or red wheels also help in giving the cyclist visibility in the dark. ” – A.R.
